Stars Shine Bright …But My Reviews Don’t Need Them

Guuuiiiseee……..

….. I’ve changed my mind.

When I started this blog I started because I enjoyed reading all types of books, and felt like it was a great way for me to share with everyone what I was reading. It was also to support friends who had published books, or were on the journey to publish. For this reason I started with no star ratings. When I first posted reviews I would write a short 200-400 word paragraph on what I disliked and liked about the story. It was a refreshing way to review without the pressure of star ratings. I later asked on my Facebook page whether people preferred stars, words, or stars and words. Most said stars and words. I tried it. I truly tried it, but I just don’t think it’s working anymore. It was just far too hard to categorise my reads and

Star ratings really do affect everyone involved, reviewer, writer, reader. I’ve noticed a lot of weight is put on to the stars, but that star ratings are a really individual thing. What I feel is a three star rating (which for the record, I think is a really good rating!) may be a one star or a five star for someone else. For me, I don’t see much value in them.

Prompted by a recent blog post by Romance Novels by the Beach, I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it, so I‘ve decided to stop the star ratings again. In my future reviews, I will share with you what I loved, what I might not have loved, and why I think you should read that book, or who the best audience for the book is.

My hopes are now I won’t be pressured to put a book in a ‘box’. Instead I can give my opinion and share with you a well-rounded review based on the writing, the storyline, and my level of enjoyment. So now.. I will go forth and write up all the July reviews that are waiting!!

P.S Speaking of reviews. Have you heard the Amazon controversy?! They aren’t letting you review if they ‘think’ you ‘know’ the person. Strange things are happening! Check out the controversial blog post that started it all by author Imy Santiago. Read it here –> An Open Tipsy Letter to Amazon It’s gaining traction over the world and will be interesting to see what happens.

Confidential Craving by Piper Denna

Stand-alone Erotic Short-Story from the Fantasies Inc. Series Piper Denna Teaser

Erotic Contemporary Romance

Victoria walks into her friend’s law practice for an appointment regarding her new business, but leaves with a dinner date to pick up her documents…from his partner. The sexy attorney with a British accent has managed to reawaken the libido she’s ignored for months while launching Fantasies, Inc., an upscale resort pandering to sexual yearnings. And hey, if she’s going to capitalize on cravings, she might as well have some of her own, right?

Brett has been warned to stay away from Victoria. He’s to draw up her papers. Nothing more. Except, upon meeting her, he’s compelled to ask her out. First item on his menu? Seduction. He senses her bottled-up cravings and intends to uncork her, warnings be damned.

About the Author
Romance is sexy. And often funny, and sometimes tangled up with suspense. Let’s face it: all sorts of things get mixed up with romance in real life.
Piper Denna’s stories are not cut-and-dried romance. Her characters deal with issues female readers can relate to: independence and trust, empowerment, inhibition, an unfaithful partner, motherhood. Sometimes her characters make mistakes, and often her “bad guys” are not 100% bad. She hopes to take the reader on an emotional journey to a happy ending…with enviable sexual encounters along the way.

When she’s not writing, she edits, raises two teens along with her husband, and collects scrapbooking material. She enjoys books—or movies—with a comedic twist and hopefully a love story with lots of tension, too. Sexiest parts of a man in Piper’s opinion? The hands and eyes. Shoulders are nice too, and of course, great pecs are never amiss…

About the Author

Iyana writes M/M short stories and novellas. Her works have been published by Evernight Publishing, JMS Books, Books to Go Now, Torquere Press, Bitten Press, Leap of Faith Publishing, Breathless Press, and Alfie Dog Fiction.

Iyana is a dreamer who lives in Jakarta, a city famous for its traffic jams, a lot of cars and motorcycles, and people selling stuff on the roads. You can spend two hours on the road going to a place you can reach in half an hour in a normal situation. Thanks to the traffic jams, though, Iyana can come up with a lot of stories, mostly shorties, as she prefers to spend the time during her trips writing into her cell phone rather than sleeping.

New Release Book Review: Cocktails at Le Carmen by Isabelle Andover

Released: JUNE 19th 2015

A delightful debut that harks back to the early days of Chick Lit when heroines were flawed, funny, and forever battling for love and happiness. With quirky characters and classic comedic charm, Cocktails at Le Carmen is pure fun from page one.

When job cuts at Chloe Saddler’s London communications firm result in an unexpected transfer to Paris, she finds herself leaving behind her friends, family, and boyfriend Scott to start a new life in the City of Light. Getting to grips with La Vie Parisienne and keeping a long-distance relationship afloat is not made any easier by the culture shock. Committing the odd French faux pas and inadvertently indulging in a few too many flirtations with her very sexy (and very taken) boss, Jean-Luc, is just the start of it. Factor in her bridezilla of a sister’s wedding (the hottest event of the year in the Saddler family’s social calendar), an unexpected session of hot, naked yoga, a slightly psychotic stalker, and one incredible kiss at an infamous Montmartre nightspot, and Chloe can say au revoir to her old, safe London life and bonjour to the romance, splendour, and glamour of Paris.

Cocktails at Le Carmen is available in both print and ebook formats.

MyReviewBadge

Whilst they technically only go to “Le Carmen” twice, I did love the presence of cocktails throughout the story!
The first quarter of the book sets up the characters and the scenes and I appreciate the author for doing this. There’s a lot to inform the reader about in order to send them on the rest of the journey. Once a ‘certain’ event happens in the book I found that the storyline really picked up and reading of Chloe’s French adventures became really enjoyable. Trying not to let the hot-in-a-suit/only-a-towel, Jean-Luc distract me was a bit difficult! Who doesn’t love a French man who knows how to wear a suit and order cocktails?!! A variation of characters throughout the book adds another layer to the story, keeping it interesting and fun, and the French background becomes another layer in itself. This is a well-thought out addition to your chick-lit bookshelves. I give it three and a half cocktail fueled stars because…cocktails..yum!

Angel’s Rest: Book 1 of the Eternity Springs Series

Named one of the Top 100 Books of 2011 by Publishers Weekly magazine

Angel's Rest

John Gabriel Callahan has lost everything that mattered. All he wants is solitude on an isolated mountain estate. Instead, he gets a neighbor. Vibrant, no-nonsense Nic Sullivan is Eternity Springs’ veterinarian, and she has an uncanny plan to lure this talented architect back to the world of the living. First with a dog, next with a renovation project, and, finally, with a night of passion that ends with a surprise.

Now a man still raw from tragedy must face the biggest struggle of his heart. Can he forgive himself and believe in the power of second chances? Dare he trust in the promise of a future and brand-new family here in Eternity Springs?

Excerpt

Gabe gave in to both their desires. He tugged off his shirt and it wasn’t until he heard her shocked gasp that he realized just what he’d done. The scars had been a part of him for so long now that he forgot he even had them. He unconsciously straightened, bracing himself against the barrage of questions sure to come. Questions he had no intention of answering. That part of his life was a closed book.

The pretty veterinarian surprised him. But for that one betraying inhalation, her professionalism never slipped. Maybe her gaze was a bit softer, her touch as gentle as the snowfall, but she never once recoiled or eyed him with pity. Gradually Gabe relaxed. For a few stolen moments he allowed himself to pleasure in the sensation of human touch upon his skin.

“I’ll quarantine the boxer,” she said. “You should drive into Gunnison and see Dr. Hander at the medical clinic. He’ll put you on prophylactic antibiotics. When was your last tetanus shot?”

“Last year.”

“Good.”

Next she ran through a series of basic questions about his medical history, and then asked him to lie on his back. “Your legs will hang off the table, I’m afraid, but this way will keep your pants dry.” His jeans had been wet since he wrestled with the dog, but he kept that detail to himself and studied her through half-closed eyes as she prepared to bathe his wounds with saline. Her beauty was the wholesome, girl-next-door type. He figured the lack of a ring on her finger was due to work-related safety factors rather than marital status. Bet she was married with a couple of kids…

Book Review: The Blue Room (Vol. 1) by Kailin Gow

Genre: New Adult Contemporary Suspense

Would you sell your soul or body to find out the truth?

When Danny Blue of the Never Knights inherited his playboy billionaire father’s businesses and legacy, he didn’t realized his father’s pet project was the Blue Room, the most elite and secret club in the highest circle. He was happy to let his half-brother Terrence Blue run the club, but with Terrence’s womanizing ways and carefree attitude when it came to everything, he wasn’t sure if that was a good idea.

Terrence Blue wasn’t sure that was a good idea as well because it would cramp his style as a former patron of the club, but when he spotted virginal Staci Atussi starting at The Blue Room, he had a change of heart. Not only was Staci Atussi a knockout without knowing it, but she was the challenge he had been craving.

For Staci Atussi, working at The Blue Room was her solution to a desperate situation, but as she became integrated into the world of The Blue Room and the mysteries surrounding its patrons and the sexy Blues, she wondered if she had traded in her desperation for something far more sinister.

MyReviewBadge

I’m going to preface this review with saying I really think there is a greater audience for this book, and there are many people who will absolutely love it.

For me, I couldn’t really connect with the characters enough to really enjoy this book. I found Terrence a little annoying and not as Alpha as I would like him to be. Perhaps a little too mysterious?! I found his relationship with his half-brother to be bizarre and really hard to understand. Staci (the lead female character) was also confusing to me. I ‘got’ why she was doing what she was doing, but I found that she was too hard to understand and connect with. It’s a great preface of a story, I just couldn’t connect with any of it. Perhaps I wanted more?!? Either way, kudos to the author, because I know she has a lot of books published! I’m glad that I was able to read it and share it with others! Hopefully they’ll love it!

Book Review: On Solid Ground by Melissa Collins

Genre: Romance.  M/M Contemporary Romance

When Jacob “Dax” Daxton returns home from war, he has to fight a new battle – the one to find his place in the world. The man who normally has a clear path to victory surrounded by brothers in

combat is suddenly lost and alone. After meeting Beckett Ridge, a bearded tattoo artist, Dax’s journey begins winding down an unexpected path.

Still reeling from events that shook his foundation, Beck has never been part of anything meaningful. Now faced with responsibilities foreign and daunting, Dax’s broken spirit mends Beck in ways he never even knew he was destroyed.

As both struggle to find balance, they are healed by the comfort they find in one other. On the other side of chaos, they hope to find themselves On Solid Ground.

MyReviewBadge

I absolutely-thoroughly-enjoyed every page of this book. From the moment the book begins, Collins does a fantastic job of creating two main characters that are strong, yet flawed.  Dax and Beck are drawn together by a chance meeting, and from that moment you know these two are meant for each other.  The author does a great job of portraying these characters in an imperfect, tortured, yet beautiful manner. There are a few intimate scenes that were done with class, and conveyed the emotion Dax and Beck felt. In the end, this story is about one man’s journey through the horrors of war, and the tattooed stranger who becomes the solid rock in his life. There is lots of in between plot lines in the book that kept it a great, interesting read. I don’t want to go into them because they will spoil the read. The supporting characters were well portrayed and added another layer to the story.  I was really cheering for Dax and Beck and hoping they’d make it in the end, even through the shitty times. These boys deserve a happily ever after, especially after all they’ve been through, but will they get it!?! You’ll have to read and see!

IMG_20150217_142044

And now…. a gif-tastic addition to the review:

 Hot Tattooist: Check

A solider and his best friend: Check

A little girl who will bring them together and help them heal: Check

A love that can go the distance…..well, you’ll have to read it to see!

About the Author: Melissa Collins has always been a book worm. Studying Literature in college ensured that her nose was always stuck in a book. She followed her passion for reading to the most logical career choice: English teacher. Her hope was to share her passion for reading and the escapism of books to her students. Having spent more than a decade in front of a classroom, she can easily say that it’s been a dream.
Her passion for writing didn’t start until more recently. When she was home on maternity leave in early 2012, she read her first romance novel and her head filled with the passion, angst and laughter of the characters who she read about it. It wasn’t long before characters of her own took shape in her mind. Their lives took over Melissa’s brain and The Love Series was born.

Book Review: Bad Romeo by Leisa Rayven (GIF Review)

Bad Romeo by Leisa Rayven

While performing the greatest love story of all time, they discovered one of their own . . .

Cassie Taylor was just another good girl acting student. Ethan Holt was the bad boy on campus. Then one fated casting choice for Romeo and Juliet changed it all. Like the characters they were playing onstage, Cassie and Ethan’s epic romance seemed destined. Until it ended in tragedy when he shattered her heart.

Now they’ve made it to Broadway where they’re reunited as romantic leads once again – and their passionate scenes force them to confront the heartbreaking lows and pulse-pounding highs of their intense college affair. For Ethan, losing Cassie was h is biggest regret-and he’s determined to redeem himself. But for Cassie, even though Ethan was her first and only great love, he hurt her too much to ever be trusted again. The trouble is, when it comes to love, sometimes it’s the things that aren’t good for us that are the most irresistible.

Genre: Romance

Here’s the thing about this book (and it’s sequel, which I have read)…I had heard a lot of chatter online about this book, and when I walked into my local bookstore it was sitting front and proud on the counter display as a part of Aussie Authors spotlight. The cover is gorgeous and I just knew I had to have it! The lady who sold it to me said so many people had read it and were so mad…..because they had to wait for the sequel!! That’s a good sign for a book!!! There are just some books that come along that are so hard to describe. Writing a review that says Guh, Oh My Gosh, So Many Emotions, isn’t something that I can properly express in words. So instead..just for fun.. I made a GIF review. I promise not to GIF review every book (although I might throw in one or two, because I may be slightly addicted to them!!) Anyway, so yes…here is a very brief GIF review of Bad Romeo.

MyReviewBadge

So… we have a boy and girl…drawn together by an invisible string.

A boy who doesn’t know how to express the way he feels….

and a girl…

Passionate – steamy – undeniable….

Or …maybe not.

Will love keep them together, or tear them apart…that’s what I kept wondering as I turned each page..

Ethan needed a good talking to.. his denial was frustrating!

But for all good reasons, ones you will find out as they are woven through the story in a wonderful way.

Leisa Rayven does a magnificent job of switching between timelines seamlessly, making the transitions in the storyline flow without disruption (something I often find distracting in reads) Certainly not in this book..

Be warned… you may end up looking like this:

…and if someone tries to talk to you while you’re reading the book.. you may do this..

I won’t mince my words. This book is not a sweet, happy read. It’s heartbreaking, but beautiful.
…and when you get to the end you’ll be like… WHAT…

I need to KNOW WHAT HAPPENS.> WHAT HAAAAAAAPPEEEEEENNNNS!!!

BUT THEN…. you realise… Book 2 – Broken Juliet is ALREADY OUT!

So you rush out and buy it (or download on your Kindle) and dive back into a heartwrenching story ALL OVER AGAIN…because… Torture. You Love It!

MyReviewBadge

I read the first book in this series and absolutely loved it. It was set in Sydney, Australia and I was able to visualise locations and feel the atmosphere in those locations. *You can read my review HERE: This second book is a wonderful addition to the series. In this one we meet a career oriented Madeleine, (Maddy to her friends) who has no interest in love. It’s all business for her…. that is, until Paul comes along. In a meeting that is supposed to an innocent work commitment, lives collide to bring these two together in an undeniable attraction. And the denying is certainly Yoda strong in these two!!  I felt like they both really don’t think they deserve happiness and love, but you can see it through the pages they are so right for each other. Paul feels like he’s past his prime, and with two kids and a divorce, has made the choice that he’s not meant to be a family man… All things are not as they seem with Maddy…. a little bit of intrigue, heartache, and a surprise or two, this story a great contemporary read. This story is much more than a boardroom romance. It’s about love coming along when you least expect it.   IMG_20150217_142044

Belinda was named a top ten finalist in The Romance Writers of Australia Emerald award in both 2013 and 2014. Her debut novel, Radiant, a paranormal romantic suspense, is available on Amazon.

Her other addictions include music and cars. Belinda is a music lover and her eclectic taste forms the foundation for many of her writing ideas. Her healthy appreciation for fast cars means she would not so secretly love a Lamborghini. For now she’ll have to settle with her son’s supercar Hot Wheels collection and writing hot male leads with sports cars.

Belinda lives in Sydney, Australia, and blogs regularly about reading and writing at www.belindawilliamsbooks.com
