Excerpt: Her yoga pants stop just below the knee and are loose enough I can pull them up pretty far on her thigh. I freeze; it’s the first time since the hospital that I’ve really gotten to look at her wounds. “Hideous aren’t they?”
“Every mark, every line tells a story about someone you met over there. Each of these is a memory, this isn’t the way you would have wanted to keep them with you but that wasn’t up to you. They are your hero’s mark and you should be proud to show them off.”

Author Bio I am a born and raised Floridian who loves to travel but never forgets where my roots are. I married my high school sweetheart, have 3 kids and a crazy dog. Travelling and reading are my two favorite hobbies. I love all things Ireland and have been lucky enough to visit twice. I hope to one day watch a Major League Baseball game in every stadium in the country.

MyReviewBadge

This story definitely falls into the Young Adult category for me. I did find it a little difficult to get into the mind of the main characters, but it was because she was well written as a teen read (and for me, that was a long time ago!). The author does a good job of setting the scenes throughout and most certainly has a way of immersing such emotion into the story.

This story takes the reader through a timeline that spans a few years. The characters go through A LOT, and the story really does take the reader on that journey with them. It’s a story of heartbreak and loss, and the immeasurable feelings that come from that. At the same time, this story is about giving up one dream and creating another. Fighting back when you feel that all is lost, and living for what you believe in.

The chapters are in alternate points of view which was done in a way that helped the story travel. I really think this story will appeal to teen readers, as well as anyone who likes a teen/young adult contemporary story. I am certain I know of quite a few young readers who would love this book. The cover is intriguing and sets the tone for exactly what is to come.

This book is out now – so grab yourself a copy as soon as you can.  Keep scrolling down below to read a fun interview with the author!

Fun Questions:

1. What’s your favorite color? I feel most confident in red and it looks best with my coloring. This is also the color I associate with passion so I’m very drawn to it. My bedroom is a very deep red. I also love purple; ironically I rarely wear it though. 2. List 5 facts about yourself. I played bagpipes all through middle and high school I have 3 kids who are all musically and athletically talented. I married my high school sweetheart and we’re still going strong after 15 years. I love to travel. I’ve been to Canada, Mexico, Ireland, Scotland, England and France. I’m a terrible homemaker! I work full time plus write on the side so I’m not a true stay at home mom but I still really suck at cooking and cleaning. My husband is much better at taking care of the house than I am. 3. What do you like to do for fun? With three kids I rarely have time to consider my own idea of fun. When I do get out it’s for fondue at Melting Pot, music concerts, bowling and mini golf. I used to read incessantly but since I started writing I’ve found there is no time for reading too! Book Questions: 1. When did you start writing? Over the years I’ve written small things but never took it very serious. I met some Indie authors last year and learned so much about this DIY world. It was the first time I thought about writing for publishing. Knowing you don’t have to go through publishing companies and face rejections was eye opening for me. 2. Who are some of you favorite authors? What are some of your favorite books? Tessa Dare is by far my favorite and I love all of her books. I recently stumbled upon Barbara Devlin and have enjoyed her Brethren of the Coast series. My daughter is a huge fan of dystopian YA, I read everything she does so we can discuss them. For that genre I really enjoyed the Legend series by Marie Lu. 3. Who inspired you so start writing? Last year I was inspired to write a story for my hubby. He hates to read, I’ve tried buying him various genres but he never finished one. I decided to try writing a story I thought he could get through and maybe have it turn him on in the process. Amazingly he finished my story but sadly it didn’t inspire him to read anything else. 4. What genre’s do you like to read that most? Historical romance is my favorite genre; I am in awe of anyone that can write it.

How would you describe the writing to publishing process? Any fun analogies?

I wrote a webpost not so long ago describing writing like herding cats

“So as I sit down to write this post, my thoughts are scattering all over the place, heading off in a thousand and one different directions and tipping their feline noses in the air at the very thought of cohering into anything rational – let alone brilliant, scintillating or inspirational. And sometimes, being a writer is just like that – juggling the demands of life with the need to find the head-space to write or juggling different ideas and images that pull away in different directions.” http://www.adelejonesauthor.com/herding-cats/

Another time, I compared writing to climbing Mount Everest. While much of the time writing is a dream come true, the ideas and stories seem to write themselves. Whatever it is, it’s certainly an adventure J

Are you a plotter or a fly by the seat of your pants type writer?

I would say I’m a “tweener” – I usually have some tent posts (beginning, middle, end & a handful of other major plot points) but a lot of the detail comes out as I write – or daydream about that story.

Do you listen to music or are you a silence in the library writer?

I usually write without music at home – though I don’t mind writing in a busy café either and sometimes have to write with lots of interruptions.

You’re going to a deserted island and you’re allowed 3 books to read for the rest of your life… which books and why?

That’s almost impossible to choose just three books. Could I take a kindle with solar rechargable batteries? Just kidding.

Lord of the Rings because I love fanasty and C S Lewis Narnia series and Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings were my first introduction to this genre. Besides LOTRs is a nice long book.

A contemporary translation of The Bible. Because I find so much inspiration and encouragement in its pages.

The complete works of William Shakespeare – because Shakespeare’s stories are timeless and have drama, tragedy, humour, romance, myth, history, poetry and prose.

QandA

1. How would you describe the writing to publishing process? Any fun analogies?

My writing to publishing process is like being in a relationship. Sometimes you love the book, sometimes you want to stab it in the heart for mistreating you, but at the end of the day you stick together and see it through because that’s just what you do. For many authors, they can knock out a book in about a month. I, unfortunately, am not one of those people. Urban fantasy takes a little more research and world building in order to make it good. At the minimum, writing a book will take me six months, and another six months of editing, editing, editing and then proofreading. Maybe then it’ll be ready for some beta readers. I don’t rush the process. I’m putting my name to the story. I want to be known for having great, well-thought out stories, not just hastily thrown together ones. The day you hit the publish button is a good day though because you know you’ve done all you can.

2. Are you a plotter or a fly by the seat of your pants type writer?

I’m definitely a plotter. The first book I ever published was written without a plan and it took me three and a half years because I kept changing things to make it better. If I’d taken the time to plot, it wouldn’t have taken so long. I’m also meticulous when it comes to characters and the geography of my books. I have notebooks filled with character descriptions and maps to make sure I don’t have any plot holes.

3. Do you listen to music or are you a silence in the library writer?

I listen to music, but what I listen to changes with the tone of the scene. For example, if I’m writing a love/sex scene, the music I like is more ballads and love songs. If I’m writing about a murder scene or a fight (definitely more my style) then I listen to something heavier, or something with a faster beat and usually with a lot of swearing.

4. You’re going to a deserted island and you’re allowed 3 books to read for the rest of your life… which books and why?

I’d probably take Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice” because it’s a classic. I’d also take any two randomly chosen books by J.R.Ward. That woman can do no wrong.

QandA

1. How would you describe the writing to publishing process? Any fun analogies?

Hmmm. It’s a lot like poking your eyes out with blunt pencils. Slow, painful and messy. The only bit I like about writing and publishing is having a book in my hand at the end.
2. Are you a plotter or a fly by the seat of your pants type writer?

I plot. With four kids and no time, I’m a big believer in doing things in the most time-efficient way possible. I have no time to faff around changing plots. However, like with my kids, I do let my characters have a bit of leeway as we go. I’m not super-strict with them.
3. Do you listen to music or are you a silence in the library writer?

PLEASE BE QUIET. DO NOT FLICK YOUR TOES. DO NOT BLINK OR SNIFF. DO NOT EVEN BREATHE. WE ARE WORKING IN HERE, ORRIGHT?

4. You’re going to a deserted island and you’re allowed 3 books to read for the rest of your life… which books and why?

Pride and Prejudice. Or anything by Jane, actually. Her books make me laugh every time, and I have so much so learn from her construction and characterisations.

A Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth. The India setting reminds me of my childhood growing up in Pakistan, the characters are wonderful, and it’s incredibly long, which is useful, because I’ve got the rest of my life, right?

The Bible. In my estimation the most important and most interesting story ever told. Plus it’s incredibly long, which is useful, again, because, well…

Sunday Spotlight: Authors On Show – Michelle Irwin

I thought we’d try something a little different around here and start a weekly post called Sunday Spotlight – Authors on Show.  A place to showcase some authors and see what book or books they have out all in one post! I may not have read the books posted, so please know that this is all about sharing the love and discovering new authors, together. Kicking off the inaugural Sunday post is……

About the Author

Michelle Irwin BioMichelle Irwin has been many things in her life: a hobbit taking a precious item to a fiery mountain; a young child stepping through the back of a wardrobe into another land; the last human stranded not-quite-alone in space three million years in the future; a young girl willing to fight for the love of a vampire; and a time-travelling madman in a box. She achieved all of these feats and many more through her voracious reading habit. Eventually, so much reading had to have an effect and the cast of characters inside her mind took over and spilled out onto the page.

Michelle lives in sunny Queensland in the land down under with her surprisingly patient husband and ever-intriguing daughter, carving out precious moments of writing and reading time around her accounts-based day job. A lover of love and overcoming the odds, she primarily writes paranormal and fantasy romance.

QandA

1. How would you describe the writing to publishing process? Any fun analogies?
I don’t know about fun analogies, but the best description is different to what I expected but somehow exactly what I expected. Actually, I have an analogy but not sure if it’s “fun.” Writing to publishing is like having a baby (stay with me):
Step 1 is the learning how-to – this is the sex ed part of writing. You don’t have to do it, but you know a hell of a lot more if you do.
Step 2 is the fun part 😉 – the actual sitting and writing. This can be painful, can be brilliant. You sometimes do it when you’re not in the mood but when you are right into it everything is just flowing (*snorts* unintended pun, but leaving it there for comedic value)
Step 3 is the editing – this is a bit like antenatal classes and labor all rolled into one. It’s also sometimes painful, but it’s necessary. It helps you to understand what is happening a little better. It is where things go from being a theoretical maybe in the future to the “holy crap this is happening right now.”
Step 4 is bringing the baby home and showing it off. There’s a certain amount of trepidation of have you done everything you can to make the baby (book) the best it can be. You worry when it goes off to meet friends and strangers. You are left just hoping that you’ve done what you can do to make sure it has every possible success but ultimately it’s out of your hands.

2. Are you a plotter or a fly by the seat of your pants type writer?
I usually start out with an idea and a very loose plot. I don’t sit and plot that out further. I spend the time getting to know the characters instead. Usually when I sit to write, they look at my loose plot points, laugh, and then wander off to do their own thing. So I guess that makes me a pantser.

3. Do you listen to music or are you a silence in the library writer?
“Who turned out the lights?” Sorry, whovian joke 😉 To answer the question: music. Always. I’m the sort of person who can’t sit in a silent room without getting an irresistible urge to chuckle, which was obviously not great for exams. The right song at the right time though can get things moving in unimaginable directions. My first proper writing session after I’ve allowed myself to concede that yes this idea is going to be a book, is usually spent setting up a playlist.

4. You’re going to a deserted island and you’re allowed 3 books to read for the rest of your life… which books and why?
I always cheat when this is asked, because one choice would be my Lord of the Rings book, which is actually all 3 of the LoTRs books in one deliciously bound book. I can read this over and over again so it’s a must. The 2nd would probably be Red Dwarf omnibus, again a great book that is actually three books all in one. And lastly hmmm it’s a hard choice, but probably the complete works of William Shakespeare. I love his plays and really between those books I’ll have hours & hours of reading before I have to repeat 😉

Thank you so much for answering my questions and letting us get to know you a little better!

Blog Tour – I’m Your Man by Joanne Rawson

ImYourManBlog tour picture

Bottom Drawer is proud to present I’m Your Man by Joanne Rawson, a rising star in the chick lit genre.

BDP BADGE 1 Book Details: Novella  Genre: Contemporary Chick Lit

Summary:

Ruth Jones loves her boyfriend Justin. He is handsome, has a killer body, and the sex is awesome. He does have one major fault though. He travels so much with work that she only gets to see him once or twice a week, and that is his reasoning for always wanting to . . . stay in. At first she’s happy that he only wants to be with her, but over time, his habit of jibbing out at the last minute for every family occasion, work function, or any bloody occasion that involves socialising, really does her head in. All she wants, for goodness sake, is for people to get to know her boyfriend. Okay, so she wants them to see she has a hunk of a boyfriend, but is that so wrong? When Ruth wakes up in a hotel room one morning suffering from a major hangover, she tries to piece the events of the previous night together. Feeling let down by yet another no-show by Justin at a work function, she headed to the bar and ordered a drink. The last thing she remembers is sitting next to an average-looking guy with a nice accent and large hands, and wondering just what those hands could do given half the chance. When the bathroomimyourmanpolaroid door opens and Mr. Average walks out, she realises that at the ripe old age of thirty-three, Ruth Jones has experienced her first one-night stand. A one-night stand that is about to send her world into utter turmoil.

I’m very excited to be hosting a tour on the Bottom Drawer Publications blog tour for Joanne Rawson’s fun novella, I’m Your Man.  You can read my review of the book that I posted in October —> HERE

Read on for my interview with Joanne Rawson….

What made you go for “Mr Average” instead of who I dubbed “Mr-Oh-You’re-So-Hot-That-You-Probably-Don’t-Exist-In-Real-Life” like you see in so many books? Also – any Picspiration ….?!?!? *grins*
For that reason, I try to make my stories as near to life as possible and let’s face it ladies, we all know that the chances of meeting “Mr-Oh-You’re-So-Hot.” They-Don’t-Exist-In-Real-Life. Okay, they do exist but they certainly wouldn’t be looking at us. Now Ruth on the other hand did have Justin, the hot one she could not believe chose her, and what a prat he was! At the end of the day I would pick Danny over Justin. Isn’t that what we look for in a man: sensible, reliable and a man who makes you laugh, but most of all takes an interest in you?

Did you have any issues trying to fit everything in with the length of the book – being a novella, and why did you choose that length?
No, I love writing novellas that is part of the challenge to get as much information and detail into a story that can be read during a lunch hour, or on the train home from work, and still give the reader the satisfaction of reading a full-length novel. Plus, as an author I can produce more novellas in a year than I can a full novel, thus keeping my readers checking my website for more new releases (I hope – fingers crossed.)

Have YOU ever sung Mustang Sally at karaoke night?!?!
Not Mustang Sally, but I have sung at Karaoke nights. I won a Christmas Karaoke with my rendition of Cabaret!

What is your favourite genre to read?
I love reading all types of books but if I had to choose, it would be murder mystery, crime and thrillers.  Give me a good murder any day.

Is there a method to the way you write, beginning to end – middle – backwards?
I am a beginning to end kind of girl! I always have a pen and paper to hand, even when I am out, so my husband is used to me midway through conversation pulling out my pad and scribbling. Don’t laugh, but when I am writing and alone, I often act out the story.

Is there anything you left out that you wished had been in the book?
There were some changes from the original manuscript that I changed during editing, that both myself and Bottom Drawer felt improved the story, but no, I am so pleased with I’m Your Man.
