Book Review: Marigny Street by Annie Rose Welch

Marigny Street
(Saving Angels Series #1)
 Annie Rose Welch
 Genre: Romance
Do you believe in the power of dreams?

Way down south on Marigny Street in the heart of New Orleans, the land of Catholic intercessions, purgatory, and supernatural superstitions, young Evangeline Chenier dreams of a radiant boy who saves her from a storm. She takes the dream seriously – in her family, dreams are sometimes more than dreams. Sometimes they foretell the future. Sometimes they create it.Years later, Eva is no longer the same wistful girl but a hardened woman who no longer believes in dreams. Losing faith in her gift, she becomes lost in a nightmare of emotion, mourning her son, separating from her husband, and stewing in a dead-end job. And then fate brings her an unlikely surprise: one of the most famous movie stars in the world, Gabriel Roberts.

Caught by something in his eyes, Eva agrees to show him the real Big Easy on his last night in New Orleans—an evening that turns into four dreamy days spent recapturing lost faith and discovering a love neither expected. Realizing Gabriel is the boy from her childhood dream, Eva must leave everything behind—her husband, her family, her history, and the beautiful city she calls home—and gamble it all for the dream that has saved her on MARIGNY STREET.

Excerpt

I shook my head. “Tell me, Gabriel, what are your dreams about?”
“Nothing.  I never dream.”  He shrugged.
“Never?”
“I’ve never once in my life had a dream.  And I never look in a mirror – or I try my hardest not to anyway.”
“Why?”  How could you never dream?  Or look in a mirror?
He sighed.  “I believe the only things in this life that can truly show your reflection are the things you love the most in this world.  And I don’t love myself enough to want to look in the mirror.”
He laughed.  “But when I look at you I can see myself perfectly.  And even though I never dream, I do pray.  Do you  to know what I prayed for before I met you?”
I nodded.
“I prayed for an angel – to save me.  I asked for a little help from up above, and now you’re here.  You are cake and ice cream; sugar and spice, and everything nice.  And when you smile, you make me feel the way the world looks when the sun shines through a foggy day.”
All I could do was smile.

SGMyReview

“A story of loss, faith, and a love that transcends space and time.”

I wasn’t sure what I was getting myself into with this book. The tagline is as mysterious and the story that unfolds. It’s a mystery, as well as a heartbreaking story of love. A love so intense that it hurts to breathe. The mystery revolves around the circumstances of how the two main characters meet. Eva goes through an unimaginable tragedy in life and has given up on life and living. Can the mystery man she meets on the steps of the courthouse be her salvation? Set in New Orleans, there’s a great blend of culture that comes through the pages.

The beginning of the book is totally unexpected. The lilting of the Cajun language had me intrigued and wondering about the world of dreams and reality. The story really picks up half way through the book as you start putting the pieces of the puzzle together. Definitely makes you read through to the end to find out if what you’re expecting is what happens.

One of my favourite moments in the book happens about half way through:

“What is your full name, Eva?”
“Evangeline Maria Chenier.”
“Evangeline, Evangeline,” he softly whispered, almost like a song, with reverence.
“Evangeline Maria Chenier. You’re not done living yet, the best is yet to come. You’re going to be just fine. You are.”
“Do you think you’ll ever be the same?”
“Never. But not because of the path I followed. I’ll never be the same because I found you.” He smiled.

A lovely reminder to live, not just exist. Read this book if you’re after a little love story mixed in with mystery.

Author Bio

Born and raised in New Orleans, Annie has a habit of shortening her words and telling long stories. She speaks with a southern flair and cooks with it too. At the tender age of twenty- one, she hitched up her wagons (took her first plane ride) and moved out west to the big shake (California). Her writing career began one sleepless night when she imagined a gorgeous woman and a man with maniacal hair floating above her like lightening bugs falling from the sky. Curious about them, their story, and why they were floating around in her head, she sat down and penned (typed) her first novel, Marigny Street. A dream come true for her, she hasn’t stopped writing since. She loves a damn good love story, always has, no matter what the genre. She is particularly moved by imperfect love that in its own unique way is perfect, the notion of love at first sight, soul mates, and things that are generally out of the norm.

When she’s not writing she enjoys dabbling in photography and finding new, inspirational music to add to her collection. Deciding on a whim to hitch up those same wagons, Annie currently resides in Texas (where everything is bigger) with her husband, daughter, and their two peculiar dogs, Boudreaux and Tabasco (who, call her crazy, bark with an accent).

With the exception of the pretty as a picture, Sutton Callaway, Kale McNab’s childhood sucked. Book Review: Nashville Part One – Ready to Reach by Inglath Cooper

cover-extended-license-photo-for-coverfotolia_35696851_x3-681x1024

Genre: New Adult Romance

Synopsis:

Ever thought a dream might pass you by?

Nineteen-year old CeCe Mackenzie is determined to make her dreams come true. She heads for Nashville with not much more to her name than a guitar, a Walker Hound named Hank Junior and an old car she’d inherited from her grandma called Gertrude. But when Gertrude ends up on the side of I-40 in flames, Nashville has never seemed farther away. Help arrives in the form of two Georgia football players headed for the Nashville dream as well. When Holden Ashford and Thomas Franklin stop to offer CeCe and Hank Junior a ride, fate may just give a nod to serendipity and meant to be. Because while CeCe is chasing after her dream, she might find love as well.

SGMyReview

If you love country music, hopes and dreams, you’ll love this book.

Nashville, Part One – Ready to Reach, reminds of the amazing show “Nashville” and I automatically saw the parallels when the characters make it to the Bluebird Café. Love, Love!

This story is a really sweet story of CeCe who, with her dog, guitar, and an ancient automobile set off from Virginia to Nashville, to live the dream. After a bit of drama, CeCe meets Holden and Thomas, two guys heading to the same destination with the same dream. Her knights in shining armour, perhaps. There is a little bit of tension, and a gracious amount of storylines to keep the story rolling.

The characters are lovely and likeable, and I really enjoyed the story. The author has a delightful writing style that is incredibly easy to read and will have you finishing the story in one sitting. I wouldn’t classify it as a ‘romance’ novel, but it does have romance in it. Perhaps there is more to come in the next few instalments! I would class it as a contemporary fiction, with lots of goodness to come.

This is only a review for part one. The rest of the story has been released on Amazon. You can get them as individual instalments, or click on the Amazon link to go to the box set.

New Release Book Review: Modern Heart by Belinda Williams

modernheartcover

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Synopsis:

Limited time only: Dream career! Perfect man! The catch? Emotional availability.
Scarlett Wong has a reputation for toughness. A talented and often feared Creative Director at an award-winning Sydney advertising agency, she doesn’t do relationships, she doesn’t invite men home, and she never stays the night. The only people who see her softer side are her three closest girlfriends, and they’re finally convinced they’ve found her perfect man: John Hart.
Scarlett’s never been one to back down from a challenge and she’s not going to start now. But when John secures Scarlett an invitation from one modernheartteaser1of New York’s leading galleries to exhibit her artwork, it means putting herself out there like never before. Scarlett’s perfect man wouldn’t interfere in her life like this – would he?
For a woman who thinks she’s not scared of anything, Scarlett is about to discover she’s not as tough as she thinks. Will she take the chance to turn her secret passion into a career, risk the safety of her advertising career, and let John in? Or will old habits die that little bit too hard?

SGMyReview

Belinda Williams has continued to excel in bringing together characters with emotion and substance. IN her latest release, Modern Heart, she will have you cringing, cheering, and hoping that emotions don’t ruin everything.

Scarlett Wong is a self-proclaimed emotionally detached career woman. Having been pressured all her life to do the things she doesn’t love Scarlett finds it hard to accept that she may just be good at something she loves, art. In the book she battles with her relationship with a controlling mother. A strict Chinese immigrant, Scarlett’s mum sees her daughter as an academic, not an artist. This has meant Scarlett carries scars throughout the story. Can she begin the heal these scars as she gets older, and discover that art is her true passion?!

Enter Mr. Perfect. John ‘bloody’ Hart. All her friends know he’s the guy for her, but she has so many personal issues she’s not willing to let him in. They’ve met before, in book one, but things finally begin change when she decides to take a chance. This book is so much more than boy modernheartteaser3and girl get together. There is a lot of emotion and it flicks between Scarlett remembering significant events from her childhood, and the present. This book really is about a woman coming to terms with herself, and the choices in her life that she has control over.

I really enjoyed reading the dynamics of the friends, again. Being set in Sydney is really fun to read, and I love to imagine exactly where they may be (just as I did in The Pitch – book 1). Modern Heart is the perfect next installment in the City Love series. A mixture of friendship, cynicism, coming to terms with who you are, and finding that life leads a tricky road. This book is all about navigating through choices you make in life, and how it can be so much better with friends, and love.

Book Review: The Book With No Pictures by B.J. Novak

20151113_124200

Genre: Children’s Book

Inside Cover Blurb:

A book with no pictures?

What could be fun about that?

After all, if a book has no pictures, there’s nothing to look at but the words on the page.

Words that might make you say silly sounds…

In ridiculous voices…

Hey, what kind of book is this, anyway?

SGMyReview

A little bit different on the blog today!! A fantastic children’s book, that has seriously jumped up on my favourites list. I can’t wait to read it to a classroom full of kids….

I saw this book on the internet after a video was uploaded of the author reading it to a room full of children. The delight in their faces was contagious. When I saw it on the bookshelf of my local bookstore I knew I had to have it.

What a brilliant concept. The idea is that the book doesn’t have any pictures, but it does have lots of silly, fun words. It’s up to the reader of the book to engage and truly throw themselves into the story telling. I read this to my five year old who was in hysterics. I had to stop at one point because she was laughing so much. Once we finished, she immediately wanted me to read it again. This time, even though she knew what was coming, she loved it just as much as the first time.

The engagement levels, and entertainment this book provides are endless. With words like BOO BOO BUTT (an absolute favourite, of course! – You said BUTT!), and ma GRUMPH-a-doo, this book lends itself to a little silly, and a lot of fun.

A must buy for any parent, or school library. My five year old has requested we read it to her six and eight year old siblings, as soon as they get home from school!!!!!

B.J. Novak has hit it out of the park with this one! We needs lots more books that lend itself to imagination!

Book Review: Redemption Road by Katie Ashley

Genre: MC Romance / Contemporary Romance / Bikers

Synopsis:

Looking for a walk on the wild side, Annabel Percy, the daughter of a powerful politician, gives in to an attraction to a sexy biker she meets one night. But she finds herself living a nightmare when she’s kidnapped and transported into a hell on earth she never could have imagined.

Born and bred into the Hells Raiders MC, Nathaniel “Reverend” Malloy lives and dies for his brothers. But when he becomes the unexpected savior of a rival club’s captive, Rev makes it his personal mission to nurse Annabel back to health—and to shelter her from the nightmares that torment her.

Once Annabel heals, she’s stunned to realize she is falling for the seductive man who saved her. Faced with their impossible attraction, can she accept the life he leads, or will Rev walk away from the only life he’s ever known for the woman he was never supposed to love?

SGMyReview

Katie Ashley sets the pace almost immediately in the first chapter of Redemption Road.  After the first chapter I had to take a moment and go back and read the synopsis and what I was reading! The author does not sugarcoat anything, and as a reader I am grateful. It didn’t deter me in any way. The raw emotion, and tragedies spilled on the pages allows the pace of the book to flow perfectly.

Redemption Road is about a man and a woman, both coming from tragedy, and the power that holds fate in their hands. Through redemption, it’s love that should be able to bring them together. But will it be enough? One of my favourite moments happens just after the middle of the book when Rev ‘the big bad biker dude’, really doesn’t understand what’s happening after he’s rescued, ‘the girl’:

“Deep down, I imagined I could fall in love with Rev Malloy with all my heart and soul, regardless of the length of time that passed or the circumstances that had bought us together. That revelation caused tears to well in my eyes. Rev’s eyes widened. “Oh shit. I’ve really fucked up, haven’t I?”
I shook my head vigorously and hurried to tell him, “No, no. You’ve done everything right. I swear.”

The chemistry and relationship between the two main characters, Annabel and Rev, is so well written that you’ll be sucked into their lives and eagerly awaiting fate to deal them a good card. Redemption Road is a great addition to the MC genre.  I’d sum this book up as a precise blend of gritty raw MC culture, and second chance romance after life has dealt you a crappy hand.

I have not read the first in this series, and appreciated that the author has written a ‘stand alone’. It’s great to be able to be drawn into an established world without feeling like you’ve missed out on something by not reading the other novels (yet!).

SGMyReview

Violet Chain is a contemporary romance. The title is wordplay on the two main characters: Violet and Chain. This book was an unexpected read. I have to say, the cover didn’t capture me, but it’s a true case of don’t judge a book by it’s cover. It was a super quick read, which means the words flowed easily from the page. There were lots of little details making up a contemporary romance, which will appeal to the genre readers. However, something a little different the author did was made the male character the pursuer, and the female character being the hesitant one to jump into any form of relationship. Obviously, this comes as a part of the opening scene of the book, where Violet catches her fiancé cheating at their engagement party. The book is about Violet trying to get past this, and to gain independence, whilst voiletchainteaserbeing pursued by someone who may just be “the one”. He just happens to be a hot, rich guy, who only has eyes for her.

There’s some drama and by the end of the book you’ll be getting right into the story and them BAM – Cliffhanger!! Be warned! It certainly shouldn’t stop you from reading this book, and starting what looks to be a pretty dramatic series. I look forward to hearing about the next installment and catching up with Violet, and Chain.

Excerpt
One

The silent communication in her eyes, the stillness of her body told me she knew I was hurting.
Her hand cupped the nape of my neck. “It’s okay, I’m here—I’m here,” she whispered as she kissed each tear on my cheek.
She slanted her mouth to capture mine and kissed me slowly as her hand curled around my body, pulling me against hers. I drew a breath and held it as her lips caressed my neck.
I was falling.
Deeply.
Unconditionally.
In love with her.
A chill swept across me as the warmth of her body left mine and she sat up, sliding off the t-shirt I had given her to wear to bed, then slid on top of me.
Her deft fingers slipped beneath the waistband of my boxers, light kisses raining from her lips against my skin as she moved down my body, sliding my boxers off and throwing them to the side. She reached to the nightstand to grab a condom, when my hand stopped hers. I wanted to feel all of her—bare.

Her eyes blinked hard as I flipped her over and slid on top of her.
As our sleek bodies moved feverishly against each other, I held her tight, wanting to remember the smell of her hair, the touch of her skin, the taste of her lips. This was where I wanted to be, this was where I belonged, buried inside of her.
As we found our release together, her body fell limp against mine and I wrapped my arms around her, never wanting to let her go. I raised my head to look down at her and could see tears forming in her eyes and I knew for that moment, she was completely mine and I was hers. And I knew I was ruined, I would never feel the same way about another woman as I felt about Violet.  I kissed her softly on the lips.

Excerpt
Two

His hand slid to the curve of my back and he pulled me into a deep embrace. My eyes met his and they gleamed with a
softness and gentleness that took my breath away. He smiled as he slid his finger down my cheek, across my chin, before slipping back into a kiss. I didn’t know if it was the way his lips softly touched mine, or if it was the loving way he had looked into my eyes, but everything about Chain at that moment captured my heart.

He placed feather kisses across my collarbone, the curve of my neck, my jaw, and then claimed my lips. The kiss was soft, slow and lingering. As our lips parted our tongues met in sync. I held him close, wanting to remember his strong shoulders,
the touch of his skin to mine. His hand caressed the inside of my thigh and I moaned, then he curled me close to him and kissed me with a passion that made my heart skip a beat.

As our bodies slowly moved against each other, I felt something reaching deep inside of me, gripping at my heart, overwhelming my emotions, causing tears to stream uncontrollably from my eyes. Chain lifted his head, staring into my eyes, and I saw he was mirroring the same feelings as I.
As he circled his hips slowly, we found our release together and I exhaled sharply. That familiar feeling filled me, that stabbing, aching feeling.
It surrounded me.
Engulfed me.
Suffocated me.
I turned away from Chain, hugging my pillow, my mind drifting off into a pit of despair. As much as I tried to fight it, to run from it, there was no denying that I was falling hard for Chain Alexander and there was no way of escaping.
