Book Review: It’s Not Me, It’s You by Mhairi McFarlane

itsnotmeGenre: Women’s Fiction. Adult Literature.

Delia Moss isn’t quite sure where she went wrong.

When she proposed and discovered her boyfriend was sleeping with someone else – she thought it was her fault.

When she realised life would never be the same again – she thought it was her fault.

And when he wanted her back life nothing had changed – Delia started to wonder if perhaps she was not to blame…

From Newcastle to London and back again, with dodgy jobs, eccentric bosses and annoyingly handsome journalists thrown in, Delia must find out where her old self went – and if she can ever get her back.

MyReviewBadge

This story had me aching with the intensity reserved for stories that really touch my emotions. The beginning had me gasping and being all of the sad, but it set me on a path that throughout the book I was rooting for Delia to get through life and make good choices. There were many times were I didn’t know where the author was going to go in regards to relationships in the book, and it made me even more excited and anxious to keep reading. This book was a great read, and will leave the reader on an emotional roller coaster, but fear not, you’ll get to the end and be ready to ride again! I vote this book as very enjoyable, clever, smart, funny, and emotional. Get on it! This is McFarlane’s third novel and I’m now on a mission to read her first two, especially if they’re as clever and easy to read as this one was.

Review: Only in New York by Lily Brett

LilyBrettNYcover

Genre: Entertainment. Nonfiction (Adult)

New York is a walker’s city. You can walk for hours. The streets slip by. There is so much to look at, so much to take in. I walk a lot. Especially when I am not writing…

Lily Brett’s love affair with New York began as an outsider in her late teens when she was posted on assignment there as a young Australian rock journalist. In her early forties she returned, together with her soul mate and three children, to start a new life, and for the last twenty-five years she has called New York home.

This witty, candid and moving collection of short pieces celebrates the city that’s now part of her heartbeat. A compulsive walker, Brett takes us to her favourite places and introduces us to the characters of the city that has nurtured, perplexed and inspired her. She brings to life the delights of Chinatown, the majesty of Grand Central Station, the lure of spandex and sequins in the Garment District, and the peculiarity of canine couture. And she muses on the miracle of love in the Lodz ghetto, the possibility of loneliness amidst skyscrapers, and the joy and redemption in a child’s curiosity.

Full of wisdom, humour and grace, Only in New York is a human portrait of a city much loved – and of a woman in step with herself.

This witty, clever book was a change of pace for me. It was a delightful read. I enjoyed reading about the insight into one woman’s relationship with a city she calls home.

Her short, sharp ‘scenes’ transport you throughout New York and make you want toOnlyinNYQuote write a list of ‘places that the locals go’ next time you visit. From places she loves to walk, restaurants she loves to frequent, to a brief encounters with someone she is ‘sure she knows’, Lily Brett creates refreshing and fun storylines that lends itself to remind us that human contact has been lost in our world of technology, but really is just a phone call away. There is no ‘beginning’ and there is no ‘end’, but there is a wonderful amount of stories told ‘in between’.

Blog Tour – Cutting Out by Meredith Shayne

Cutting Out Tour Badge1

You might remember I had the pleasure of reviewing the new release, Cutting Out by Meredith Shayne. A story about sheep shearing in New Zealand, and finding love when the world seems to be against you.

I have the honour of hosting a spot on the blog tour this month and got to ask the author some questions. Check out the interview below.

In Cutting Out you’ve created such a great atmosphere surrounding the shearing stations and camaraderie amongst the crews, what type of research did that entail?

Thank you, I’m glad to hear you think that! I’m a bit of a reality TV nut, and there’s a TV show that plays here called Shearing Gang (an episode can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1W4vkoDA5BI), which I watch and love. It’s a bit of a warts-and-all kind of show, very Kiwi in the way the subject is treated. The original idea for the setting came from that, but a lot of the way the Kiwis are with Shane, all the teasing about him being Australian, etc, came from my own real life. That’s just the way Kiwis are with us Aussies, bro! J

Was there any particular inspiration for the characters of Lachie and Shane?

Not really. When I decided to set the story in New Zealand I knew that I wanted a Maori presence in it, particularly since there’s a high proportion of Maoris in shearing. I also wanted one of the main characters to be Australian—it seems I’m incapable of writing a story without an Aussie in it, and in fact there ended up being two in there, so there you go! But apart from deciding on some general characteristics, once I’ve started thinking about a story the characters tend to pop into my head pretty much fully formed, and seemingly from out of nowhere. I wasn’t necessarily intending on making the second main character Maori, but then Lachie showed up and that was it.

Do you have a particular process of writing? From start – to – finish, or ending first?

I’m not a planner, so I never have an outline. I generally know how I want it to start and end, and a few things that happen in between, but that’s it. Things to add in come to me as I’m writing. I tend to start at the beginning, but then there’ll come a point where I start skipping around writing scenes out of sequence. Then I have to go back and stitch them all together. I wish I didn’t do things that way, but it’s happened during the writing of every one of my books so far, so that’s clearly my process! It’s a good way to avoid writers block though, I have to say.

Do you have any advice for people who would really like to get into the MM genre, but don’t know how to?

That is a really good question. I think to someone who’s never written before I would say: the only way to do it is to jump in, publishing a book has never been more achievable than it is now. Read a lot in the genre, decide what you do and don’t like in a story, then write the one that’s in your heart. Be prepared for writing to be harder than you ever expected. Find a writing process that works for you, and don’t worry if it’s different to everyone else’s, it can’t be wrong if it works for you. Put one word in front of the other however you can until you’re finished, then give it to someone—preferably at least two someones—you can trust to tell you the truth about it. Listen to them, but remember it’s your book, not theirs. Once it’s done, decide which publisher to send it to very, very carefully. Seek as much advice as you can about that from published M/M authors, because after you’ve signed on the dotted line is too late to find out you’ve made a mistake. Once it’s out in the world, let it go—some people are going to love it, but some people are going to hate it, and there’s nothing you can do about that. Holding a paperback book that you wrote in your hands will never get old, and all the blood, sweat and tears you’ve shed along the way will be worth it every time someone emails you to tell you how much they adored your book.

Will we get another book, perhaps Zach *grins*?!?!

Haha! Possibly. I don’t ever really plan sequels but if there’s one character who deserves to be completely knocked on his arse by love, it’s Zach Harris. And I did like writing in that setting, so… he might get lucky. J

Are there any parts to the book that you edited out, that you think would have been good, or that you could share?!

Actually, there’s not! I don’t tend to cut big chunks out when I edit, if they need to be changed I rewrite them instead, so I don’t have a little pile of deleted scenes to share. Occasionally I do write missing scenes or alternate point-of-view scenes after a book has been published which I usually make available for free, but I haven’t done that for Cutting Out as yet! Sorry. 😉

What’s your favourite genre to read?

I mainly read M/M these days, and I’m a pretty wide-ranging reader within that but funnily enough, because I hardly ever write it, if I was to pin down a subgenre I would say that I really like to read paranormals. That carries over into mainstream fiction as well, because I love a good urban fantasy, and paranormal romance. I mainlined the entire Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews last year, and they almost killed me, but in the absolute best of ways.

About the Author:
A scientist in a past life, these days Meredith Shayne mainly uses her scientific training to poke holes in television pseudoscience. Originally from Australia, she moved to New Zealand to start a new life a few years ago and hasn’t regretted it for one minute, even if she frequently wishes that the New Zealand weather was a little better; if she’s forced, she’ll admit that the refreshing lack of animals that can kill you in New Zealand makes up for a little rain. Meredith travels a lot, so much so that she has developed a shameful love of airplane food and knows her passport number by heart. When she is at home, she enjoys baking, horrible music from the 1980s, reality television, and gloating any time Australia thrashes the living daylights out of New Zealand on the sporting field. Thank you to everyone who stopped by and supported the giveaway!

Don’t forget to check out the Stage Dive Series!

Today on the blog I have something super fun to share with you! It’s a GIVEAWAY!

I have a love of boys with guitars. It’s true. I even have a tattoo to prove it..but… Boys with guitars WITH tattoos…well that’s just the frosting on the cupcake! With that in order, let me introduce you a bunch of books that have everything above, and more….Welcome to the Stage Dive Series! One day I was walking through Dymocks (a bookshop here in Sydney) and I wasn’t looking for anything in particular. I love to browse and see what’s available, and I am a sucker for a cool cover. The first book of the series, “Lick” completely stood out to me. I think I walked past it at least four times constantly starting at the cover, before I finally picked it up and read the back. I read the first page and knew I had to have it!
The world of Stage Dive is fun, crazy, silly, emotional, and a really great read. I’ve enjoyed them so much that I’ve insisted my friends borrow my paperbacks! With each book, the characters gets better and the story line comes together to resolve itself from previous books. There are little clues for next books sprinkled throughout, and I love how the author has stitched them all together. I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of the final book in the series, due out next year!

In the meantime, you all need to get onto the first three books! In honour of an amazing series (and author!) Kylie Scott has provided an awesome book of Lick & Stage Dive swag back giveaway to one of my lucky readers! She will send it internationally!!

The Stage Dive Series

Waking up in Vegas was never meant to be like this.

Evelyn Thomas’s plans for celebrating her twenty-first birthday in Las Vegas were big. Huge. But she sure as hell never meant to wake up on the bathroom floor with a hangover to rival the black plague, a very attractive half-naked tattooed man, and a diamond on her finger large enough to scare King Kong. Now if she could just remember how it all happened.

One thing is for certain, being married to rock and roll’s favourite son is sure to be a wild ride.

playpolaroid

Mal Ericson, drummer for the world famous rock band Stage Dive, needs to clean up his image fast – at least for a little while. Having a good girl on his arm should do the job just fine. But he didn’t count on exactly how much fun he could have being with the one right girl.

Anne Rollins has money problems. Big ones. But being paid to play the pretend girlfriend to a demented drummer was never going to be a good idea. No matter how hot he is. She’s had her sights set on her male bestie, Reece, for years. And now that she’s supposedly taken, he’s finally paying attention. If only the chemistry between her and her rock star would stop hitting new heights. leadpolaroid

Stay up all night with the sexy rockers in Stage Dive, the epic rock star romance series from New York Times bestselling author Kylie Scott, author of Lick and Play.

Lena is the only thing holding Jimmy back from total annihilation. But who will save her from him?
Lena Morrissey has had some lousy jobs in her time, but none of them compare to being the personal assistant to one of the rock world’s biggest – and most egotistical – stars. As the lead singer of Stage Dive, Jimmy is used to having whatever he wants, whenever he wants it. But after a PR disaster landed him in rehab, it’s Lena’s job to keep him on the straight and narrow.
Lena’s not willing to take any crap from the sexy rocker and is determined to keep their relationship completely professional, despite their sizzling chemistry.

But in the end, Jimmy always gets his way…

Don’t miss a beat with the fourth and final novel in the New York Times and USA Today bestselling Stage Dive series from Kylie Scott.

One by one, the members of Stage Dive are falling in love. David, Mal, and Jimmy have all taken the plunge, and now it’s Ben’s turn—only he refuses to fall into that trap. The sexy bassist enjoys his no-strings-attached lifestyle. But when Ben is forced to keep the one girl he’s always had a weakness for out of trouble in Sin City, he quickly learns that what happens in Vegas, doesn’t always stay there.

Coffee and A Book

I just thought I’d share some snaps of how I really enjoy starting my day. Although I have many commitments that take me away from hiding away and reading all day, this is my favourite combination. Coffee and A Book (make mine a double shot latte). I also read on various devices. Although I LOVE the feel of a paperback book, sometimes it’s not practical to carry around. What’s your favourite device to read on? I love the Kindle App and the Kobo App because they all sync and remember where I’m at! What’s your favourite combination when you read? As you can see, mine is definitely coffee and a book!

Look out for reviews on these two books very soon!

Review – A Little Something Different by Sandy Hall

alittlesomethingdifferentpolaroidGenre: Young Adult. Contemporary Romance.

Lea and Gabe are in the same creative writing class. They get the same pop culture references, order the same Chinese food, and hang out in the same places. Unfortunately, Lea is reserved, Gabe has issues, and despite their initial mutual crush, it looks like they are never going to work things out.

But somehow even when nothing is going on, something is happening between them, and everyone can see it. Their creative writing teacher pushes them together. The baristas at the local Starbucks watch their relationship like a TV show. Their bus driver tells his wife about them. The waitress at the diner automatically seats them together. Even the squirrel who lives on the college green believes in their relationship.

ALSDquoteI was browsing the shelves of the local shops because I had an urge to have paper in my hands. You know what I mean, right? Reading e-books are great, but sometimes you just neeeed that book to feel in your hands, flip the pages, carry around. I picked up this one, because the cover was cute.

Cute. This book is cute! Adorable, quirky, fun! The story is told in different viewpoints, and it reminds of the movies that show everyone’s story from different points of view, think ALSDquote3Love Actually, Valentines Day. I found the switching of viewpoints really refreshing, and the story never faltered for it. From the bus driver, to the barista, to close friends. Not acALSDquote4tually hearing from the main couple, Lea and Gabe, kept me intrigued. We didn’t ever actually know what they were thinking, except for their dialogue with their friends…or a squirrel! My favourite view point had to be the squirrel.. he was so darn cute! Acorns! I think that the way Lea and Gabe dance around each other could be annoying, but the author has provided us with a unique way of playing it out that has you cheering them on, and hoping the next persons view would have them getting together.  It was fun to read in the young adult genre, again. This book definitely proves that you don’t need to be a teen to read these types of book.

Read this if you’re after a fun, quick, sweet, cute read. ALSDquote2

New Release & Review – Mythica by L.J. LaBarthe

mythica ebook 600x900

Genre: M/M Contemporary Paranormal Romance. Adult Fiction.

Caiden Jones is part-selkie and lives an idyllic life by the sea in South Australia. He’s had his fair share of disappointments, like being kept out of the Navy due to his mythica status, but overall he’s got a pretty good life. Until he’s in the wrong place at the right time.

Cai steps in to subdue an out-of-control minotaur and in the process suffers a serious injury to his ribs. As Cai struggles to breathe, a gorgeous suit-clad sy’lph with mesmerising blue eyes races to his rescue. When it’s learned that the minotaur was poisoned, the sy’lph, Gray, makes it his personal mission to keep Cai and his family safe.

Cai has always harboured some resentment towards the sy’lph because of their easy acceptance into the community, so the attraction he feels for Gray takes him by surprise. But how can they find out what this might mean when the lives of Cai and his family are endangered by someone closer than they realise?

I love stepping out of my comfort zone when it comes to books (well, okay, except for horror! I still can’t!!!). This book definitely was an interesting mix of things in a book. When I think of paranormal, my mind automatically goes to vampires and angels, but this is a new one. I’d go with a bit of Sci-fi in this, as well.

I enjoyed reading about mythical creatures, and although I wasn’t sure what a selkie was, a quick Google had me at a treasure trove of pics and information! (Our main character is half-seal, for those playing at home!) Who knew there was an amazing world of mythical creatures to discover!!?!!Male_selkie_by_Mapvee

The timeline in the book isn’t very long, and there are a lot of times that I wanted more interaction between the two main characters, but I think the author did a great job. The chemistry between Caiden and Gray was cute. I kept on thinking of Gray, a sy’lph, as the silver surfer from Fantastic Four! The author gives us descriptive tastes, smells, and scenery, which added in with the Aussie-isms thrown back and forth between ‘mates’, gives the reader a sense of down to earth Australia.

The drama of injuries, poisonings, kidnappings, and terrorist vigilante groups was quite reminiscent of today’s society, and I had to keep reminding myself that it was a paranormal world, not one we live in. It was fun to read an Aussie book, with the writing of an Aussie ‘voice’.

Congratulations to the author on her novel release. I look forward to checking out more of her work.

LJ LaBarthe Bio Pic

L.J. LaBarthe is a French-Australian woman, who was born during the Witching Hour, just after midnight. From this auspicious beginning, she went on to write a prize-winning short story about Humpty Dumpty wearing an Aussie hat complete with corks dangling from it when she was six years old. From there, she wrote for her high school yearbook, her university newspaper, and, from her early teens to her twenties, produced a fanzine about the local punk rock music scene. She loves music of all kinds and was once a classical pianist; she loves languages and speaks French and English and a teeny-tiny smattering of Mandarin Chinese, which she hopes to relearn properly very soon. She enjoys TV, film, travel, cooking, eating out, abandoned places, urbex, history, and researching.
L.J. loves to read complicated plots and hopes to do complex plot lines justice in her own writing. She writes paranormal, historical, urban fantasy, and contemporary Australian stories, usually m/m romance and featuring m/m erotica.

Review – Eraser by Megan Keith

erasercoverupload

Genres: Adult Fiction. Romance. Erotica. BDSM. Short Stories.

A man with no name.
Mysterious.
Dangerous.
Brooding.
Sexy.

Once a week he frequents the bar where Mackenzie works. He orders the same drink, scotch on the rocks, and he sits back on the same lounge chair, quietly watching… waiting…

He has money – that much is obvious. He wears his tailored suits well. He smells divine, of expensive cologne, and orders his scotch from the top shelf.

He drinks alone, but he never leaves that way. With a snap of his fingers, a flick of his eyes, a glimmer of a smile, he gets the attention of the most attractive women in the bar.

This time his focus is on Mackenzie. Instead of feeling nervous Mackenzie is enthralled, intrigued… and aroused.
WARNING: This novella contains explicit sex scenes (including BDSM) and is for mature 18+ readers only. PLEASE NOTE: This was originally written as a stand alone short story but after numerous requests for more, it has recently been turned into a series. Book two, Eraser Blue, and book three, Eraser Lilac, are both now available.
Looking for a quickie?! I found one! This is a good, mysterious, one hour read. It’s nice that through out this novella there is an air of mystery, and, an air of familiarity between these two. She’s a waitress in a classy bar, he’s the mystery man that always comes in regularly, and watches, waiting for the right time to take her. I was expecting a big reveal at the end, but no spoilers, I like that she doesn’t know his name, or at least it’s never revealed. This has been turned into a series, but I’m quite content to have just read this.

Give this a go if you’re after a quickie. It does contain mild BDSM, nothing off the colour charts. At the time of this review, this novella was a freebie on Amazon. It was very well edited and a smooth read.

I’d recommend reading it and seeing if you like the authors style, as she has many more titles available, and I think she’ll be one to watch.
