SGMyReview

If you are reading my blog, and this review, then I am fairly certain you have a long list of book boyfriends/husbands..amiright!? This book has taken romance readers to the next level in a fun, crazy way. Rylie is a cafe owner, romance obsessed, reader. I did feel sorry for her B.O.B at one stage, because girlfriend needed to get some rool-life action for a bit! Luckily, in steps the perfectly (imperfect?) cap wearing-bootbuckled up-Hot Tamale! Or at least that’s the nickname Rylie gives him when she accidentally falls hot_tamale_hearts_m3…you know where! Mystery Guy sits at a table, drinking coffee and typing on his laptop each day. Why is is suddenly coming in to the cafe, and paying attention to Rylie?!

This story is one to take as a feel good, fun read and should definitely be accompanied by a snack of donuts, hot tamales, mints, and coffee (you’ll understand why!) There are nods to some authors in the ‘indie publishing world’ that will make you laugh. The encounter and internal monologue of Rylie at the ‘author signing’ had me chuckling because I was imagining how it looked the first time I accidentally crash-tackle-hugged an author (Love you, LR!)!! The book follows a typical romance genre path, with drama ensuing to keep the storyline flowing. You’ll enjoy this book best on a Sunday afternoon as you ignore real life and delve into the world of romance fiction.  Vicki Green has delivered a lighthearted laugh and escape into the the crazy world of book boyfriends, and capturing one for keeps.

Excerpt

The humming of B.O.B. echoes in the bathroom but suddenly the sound lessens along with the vibration. “What? No!” I’m out of the bathroom in a flash, jog out of my bedroom and run down the hallway. Sliding on the wooden floor, I grab ahold of the kitchen doorframe, catching myself before I fall. I race into the kitchen and open my junk drawer, scouring for my batteries. “Not now. Not now. NOT NOW!” I sigh in relief as I find the package and gasp when I remove the last two. All I can think is that I need to make sure I write batteries down on my grocery list first thing in the morning.Buy Links Promo

SGMyReview

In a time of Gods and Fantasy, A Promise of Fire by Amanda Bouchet takes the reader on an amazing journey of one woman’s fight to survive. The imagery the author provides allows the reader to be transported to a whole new universe. I loved reading all about it, and whilst it was new and fictional, it felt so real. The author sets up worlds of Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades. Her detail is intricate, yet not overzealous. I felt like I was reading about fantasy worlds that reminded me of Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones.

12928126_1188398664506664_1864033951376649510_nCat and Griffin have an amazing push/pull relationship, and I really enjoyed the way the author built up the tension, the relationship, and the enduring fight they both must endure for the worlds to come together. The additional characters are exceptional and fun, and complimented the main story line well.  This is by far one of the better fantasy romance novels I have read. It wasn’t always about the romance, and I appreciated that so much. There was action, drama, and, romance. A perfect trio!  I can’t wait to read the next books in the series, because I won’t lie…..the end had me hanging for WHAT HAPPENS NEXT!?!!!!

Book Review: After the Rain by Mary J. Williams

Welcome to the NFL.
The Seattle Knights have the hottest players in the game. On and off the field.

SECOND CHANCES

Logan Price is getting a second chance.
Claire Thornton is going to make sure it counts.

Logan Price was living his dream. After years of hard work he finally made it. Starting running back for the Knights.

After only a few games, he was a fan favorite. There were whispers of a rookie of the year award.

It all ended with a devastating injury to his leg that sent him back to Oklahoma. A failed attempt at a comeback sent him into a deep depression.

His life became about two things. Working at his father’s bar, and running. One filled his days. The other made getting through the endless nights a little easier.

When an old friend offers Logan a lifeline, he’s reluctant to grab hold. He could live without football–barely. But he didn’t think he could survive getting his hopes up only to lose it all again.

Claire Thornton’s dreams are just as big as Logan’s. She left the small town where she was born, to make something of herself. It hasn’t been easy. A woman with no money and no connections. Everything she has, she’s earned. Helping Logan Price get back to the NFL will prove to her detractors that she can be a trainer. She is determined to make it in a male-dominated world.

The attraction is instantaneous.

The reasons not to get involved too numerous to list.

It only takes one kiss–one touch–for them to realize if they want their dreams to come true they need more than luck. They need each other.

After the Rain is the first book in the One Pass Away series and is available in both print and ebook formats.

SGMyReview

The story revolves around a small town footy star (Logan) who had big dreams to get out of dodge and make it to the NFL. He does just that and after college gets a coveted role with the Seattle Knights. Unfortunately, one wrong move on the football field and Logan was no longer the star of the pack. Slinking back to his home town and taking up a position at his dad’s bar, Logan is down on his luck. That is, until one night he’s given two choices: Continue to dwell on what could have been, or pick up the pieces are start living. Enter, Claire – a women working hard to make it in a ‘man’s league’. Claire has the knowledge and ability to get Logan back in to the league, but will it be enough? Are her healing hands (and heart) enough for Logan to make it back in to the big game….and can she go with him?

Not just another NFL book, this is more than a football focused story. I was pleasantly surprised to read the story, and the pace of the book. The author takes us on a journey of two people who come together with such a strong connection, that you think you know how it’ll end. Claire and Logan have great, chemistry throughout the story, however sometimes you wonder if it’s all a little too good to be true. You’ll have to read to find out!

This is book one in a series, and I’m very excited to hear that Gaige has his own story (book 3)!!!

SGMyReview

I picked up The Holly Project at my first ever author signing. I loved the front cover, and I also really loved that it was set in Sydney, Australia. It’s the second day of school holidays giphy1here in Australia, and my children don’t seem to know what a ‘sleep in’ is…so rude!!! This morning I was awoken at a ridiculous hour, so ridiculous that even my Netflix and Presto streaming services weren’t awake yet. Annoyed that I couldn’t indulge in some mindless viewing I headed to my bookshelf and searched the books I had recentlygiphy picked up at the signing. The Holly Project jumped into my hands and it ended up being a lovely way to spend a morning, and then afternoon.

Holly is a woman who hides her feelings, not so neatly tucked away in a pocket of grief after she witnesses her mum dying from cancer (side note: Cancer SUCKS). A chance meeting one day with a man who ends up being her ‘client’ sets her off on an adventure of self-discovery and love. I truly believe in whirlwind romances (having had one myself) and although I knew there had to be come angst along the way, I really loved the way the author wove the story. It was such an easy read and I breezed through it, without missing a beat. Sometimes, love is worth the risk, breathe in, breathe out, and see what happens. The chemistry, the characters, and the backdrop of Sydney made for a fun romantic getaway read.

Book Review: Wicked Heart by Leisa Rayven

24889218

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Liam Quinn is talented, gorgeous, and one of the biggest movie stars in the world.

He’s also the only man Elissa Holt has ever truly loved.

After being out of her life for six years, he and his gorgeous fiancé are set to star in the new Broadway show Elissa is stage managing. The only trouble is, when late night rehearsals bring Elissa and Liam together, the line between what is and what could have been gets blurred, and one moment of weakness will lead to a scandal that will echo around the world.

Elissa knows that falling for Liam again would be a tragedy in the making, but as any good romantic will tell you, love doesn’t always follow the script.

SGMyReview

It’s no secret that I’m a fan of Leisa Rayven. The lady knows how to pack the punches and smash it right across the page and knock you out, pounding you right in the chesticles.

The latest instalment, #3 in the “Starcrossed” series, does not disappoint.

Rayven has used her wicked way with words to tangle with our hearts and make us fall in love all over again. Following on from her popular books, Bad Romeo & Broken Juliet, this book takes the readers on a journey of the secondary characters, giving them a voice of their own. There’s the familiar push and pull that the characters do, lane-almost-kiss-5-owhich is familiar in the Starcrossed books. Sacrifice and Love once again come to the forefront and the reader is left turning the page until the very end.

One of the things I admire the most about reading these stories is the way the author weaves in the emotion and captures your heart without you even realising how invested you’ve become.

This book is easily added into my Top 10 of 2016 pile.

I can’t wait to see Leisa at the upcoming Sydney Author Event in a couple of weeks! I hope to get some swag signed – stay tuned for a giveaway!

Book Review: Lily and the Octopus by Steven Rowley

Genre: Fiction

In this moving, revelatory literary novel, a young writer finds himself unable to open up to the possibility of love — except through the companionship of his aging dachshund Lily. But with the unexpected arrival of a small octopus that affixes itself, unrelenting, to Lily’s head, it soon becomes clear this invader is strangling the life from his dog and threatening the bond between man and his one true friend.

With transportive spins into magic realism at sea and beautifully evoked universal truths of loss and longing on land, a hilariously sardonic and not altogether reliable narrator, and one unforgettable hound whose simple passions and inspiring wisdom will break your heart and put it back together again, Lily and the Octopus captures the singular search for meaning in the face of death and introduces a dazzling new voice in fiction.

SGMyReview

Excuse me for a moment while I wait for the emotional rollercoaster to slow down and cruise into the docking station, ready for me to get off. Oh my heart. This book is a wonderful, emotional, heart bleeding story of a man and his dog. Of course, once you read the first chapter you’ll know exactly how the story is going to go. Don’t let that stop you. Steven Rowley tells a wonderful tale of a dog and his owner. I fell in love with the relationship he has with Lily right from the beginning. I mean, surely everyone tumblr_mgoopn41in1rz2ot3o1_1280plays Monopoly and talks boys with their dog, right?! My heart is so full of love, but so heavy with sadness. This is a literary wonder. A book that makes you want to read it, but not continue on because you want to save yourself. You’ll never look at another dachshund without thinking of the beautiful Lily. Being a dog person I feel like I may have invested myself heavily in this book. There’s just no description of the love and loyalty a dog and owner have. Read this book… that’s all I can say. Read it and feel the love that exists in this world. I’ll be right back, I need to go and smother my two senior furry babies in lots of love!!!

~ A beautimous (both beautiful and fabulous) must-read. Grab this book! NOW!

Book Review: A Kiss From Mr Fitzgerald by Natasha Lester

AKissfromMRF

Genre: Fiction, Historical Fiction, Women’s Lit.

It’s the roaring twenties in the Manhattan of gin, jazz and prosperity. Women wear makeup and hitched hemlines and enjoy a new freedom to vote and work. Not so for Evelyn Lockhart, who is forbidden from pursuing her passion to become one of the first female doctors. Chasing her dream will mean turning her back on her family: her competitive sister, Viola; her conservative parents; and the childhood best friend she is expected to marry, Charlie.

In a desperate attempt to support herself through Columbia University’s medical school, Evie auditions for the infamous late-night Ziegfeld Follies on Broadway. But if she gets the part, what will it mean for her fledgling relationship with Upper East Side banker Thomas Whitman – a man Evie thinks she could fall in love with, if only she lived a life less scandalous…

Captivating, romantic and tragic, A Kiss from Mr Fitzgerald follows a young woman ahead of her time amid the fragile hearts and glamour of Jazz Age New York.

SGMyReview

This book was simply the bee’s knees! Stepping back in time to the 1920’s was a copacetic experience. Whilst it did take me a little while to get a wiggle on, once I got over the hurdle, there was no turning back..only turning pages! The author has undoubtedly done her research, as there is so much culture spread on to the pages.

giphyThe main character, Evelyn (Evie) Lockhart is definitely not a wallflower. She is smart, clever, and strong. Although some of her choices are questionable, and I’ll admit they left me feeling a little uneasy reading through. Despite that, I was so glad to read all the way in one sitting, and found the ending truly satisfying.

964605036161d5630a6d5d25510043d8This book had me up until 2am in the morning! I could not put it down. The whole book was littered with language from the 1920’s which makes me want to bring it back! With settings like the speakeasy, to sayings like “spifflicated” (something I’ve certainly done on the weekends past), this book is a delightful insight into a woman who is faced with adversity in a time when men ruled, and women kept quiet…until Evelyn Lockhart came along. Much more than a love story.
